Big Food companies spend a LOT of money on research to manufacture foods that make you wanting more. Time and effort is put into getting the exact ratio of sugar, salt and fat that set your taste buds tingling and leaves you craving more. Ever opened a pack of Doritos, had just one, then put the pack away? Don’t think anybody has. Or when you have a bottle of coke in the fridge and you take a small drink. 5 mins later you find your mouth watering and you are subconsciously opening the fridge for another swig out of the coke bottle. If you hadn’t drank any coke earlier, it wouldn’t even cross your mind to go for a drink if it. It really is vicious circle and junk food and soft drinks. And that satisfying crunch of the Dorito crisp is no accident either. In the industry this is known as “mouth feel”. A lot research is put into finding the perfect crunch and texture of the foods. Chip manufacturer Frito Lay has a $40,000 simulated chewing device which can find the perfect “break point “of a chip.
It baffles the mind to think that millions of dollars, along with hundreds of hours of world class scientist’s time, is being used to manufacture foods that are diminishing people’s quality of life, and basically putting people into an early grave. Buying processed foods supports this type of food industry.
2. How about some Roundup on your veggies?
You might be familiar with Roundup, the stuff you pour on those pesky weeds in the garden to kill them off (Its Weedkiller, just in case you are not familiar). Monsanto, the company who manufactures Roundup, have created some genetically modified crops (corn, soybeans) , that can withstand being sprayed with Roundup. The idea being that a farmer can save time by spraying the entire field with Roundup, crops and all, and the weeds will be killed off while the crops will survive. Basically, it’s like some terminator crops that can’t be destroyed. That really can’t be good for your digestive system.
Now you might say “But I don’t eat GMO corn so this doesn’t affect me”. The reality is that GMO foods are ingredients in lots of popular processed foods. Things like:
- breakfast cereals
- Potato chips
- packaged soups
A nice little side note is that the Monsanto Corporation were the main producers of Agent Orange during the Vietnam war. They are now creating some GMO crops that can with stand being sprayed with 2,4-D, which was the main ingredient used in Agent Orange.
"Castoreum is a yellowish-brown, unctuous substance with a strong, penetrating odour which beavers secrete from castor sacs located in skin cavities between the pelvis and the base of the tail and spray when scent-marking their territory."
Due to the diet of the beaver, this has a musky vanilla scent. And this lovely stuff is sometimes used as flavouring in ice cream and other foods. In Sweden it has been used as flavouring in schnapps. The FDA in the USA have classified castoreum as"generally recognized as safe" (GRAS), and therefore food manufacturers don't have to include castoreum in their ingredients lists and may instead refer to it as "natural flavouring." So the next time you see “natural flavouring” on some processed foods, think twice…
If you have a well-balanced diet of nutrient-dense wholefoods including: lots of vegteables, meat, fruit, seeds and nuts, your body starts to regulate itself and your hunger hormones will be kept in check. As your body will be receiving the vitamins, minerals, fats, and proteins it needs to function optimally, it will no longer send hunger signals to your brain requesting more food. When you eat processed food with little to no nutrients, your body is still craving nutrients so it tells your brain to keep eating. This is the reason you could smash a 1000 calorie meal at MacDonalds and be hungry 30 mins later. Overeating on wholefoods is surprisingly hard, so if you stick to the non-processed food choices you will be eating only what your body needs, not eating excessively.
If you want to healthy, fit, and look good naked, then ditch the processed foods. They are devoid of any good nutrients, keep you overeating and fat, and basically just toxic chemicals that your body has no idea what to do with.
